We Are A Movement
This weekend sees the opening of a new exhibition by the interesting young Norwegian artist Bård Ask at the Fimbul Galleri in Oslo.
Bård Ask works mainly with video in large-scale installations. His video work, Notio Viri Placet, which has gained a lot of critical attention, is very representative of his work. It features an unhurried video composite of 12 choristers who stand in various degrees of nervousness in front of a simulation of stars in motion before suddenly bursting into gorgeous polyphony. The work plays on the dichotomy between the still and moving image, between the group and individual, and the longing for harmony and perfection.
Ask recently created a public installation of Notio Viri Placet in Klostergarasjen (a parking house) in Bergen as part of a collaboration with the Bergen Kunsthall. The serenity of the singers combined with the beauty of the music became even more powerful when experienced within the rough environment of an underground car park .
Ask studied at the Oslo Fotokunstskole, Nordland Kunst og Filmskole, in Kabelvåg and graduated from the Bergen National Academy of the Arts in 2005. He’s had a very busy year with his work being shown in Oslo, Moss, Bergen and Kongsberg in Norway as well as exhibitions in London and New York.
Galleri Fimbul is a gallery for young contemporary art in one of Oslo’s historical and cultural areas, Kvadraturen. The gallery aims to provide a space for innovative art with monthly exhibitions from aspiring artists. Galleri Fimbul is owned by Ole Robert Fimbul-Kiserud, Trond Myrell Andersen and Therese Kiserud

Notio viri placet
Music: Jan Erik Mikalsen
The title is Latin and translates loosely into His Idea Is Good. Each singer was filmed alone, and the individual recordings were combined into a coherent composition, with all the vocals mixed together into a choir. The singers are all from the boys choir NRK Sølvguttene (The Norwegian State Broadcasting’s Boys Choir). The musical composition lasts for approximately 1.5 minutes, with 7 minutes quiet intermission, before the cycle starts all over again. During the long intermission the subjects all gaze immobile into the camera. All filming was done at NRKæs (The Norwegian State Broadcasting’s) studios at Marienlyst in Oslo.
