Aquavit and Pickled Herrings
Whenever lifeiscarbon® is in Copenhagen, we find that going back in time is as easy as taking 3 steps down into the cellar bistro Slotskælderen hos Gitte Kik. Located just off Høibro Plass on Strøget, this lunch place never ceases to charm with its well-worn furniture, lace curtains, and a staff that is quick to serve jokes along with the aquavit. Add the healthy helpings of classic Danish dishes, and you will want to stay till closing time (5 pm). We certainly did when we were in Copenhagen last week.
When commenting on the speed with which our shot glasses were filled with aquavit, Lene Just, the current “Kældermester” (Cellar Master), explained that speed of service and the location, just across the street from the Danish Parliament, is why Gitte Kik has been a favorite among politicians and journalists for decades.
The Kik family began serving food to go with the aquavit shop of the distillery in 1910. Their smorgasbord is full of handsome Danish smørrebrød (see below), classic dishes such Frikadeller (meat balls) and various roast meats. You'll have to trust us that serious food connoisseurs come here solely for the pickled herring buffet.
Unsure what smørrebrød means? Click here for a good explanation of this Scandinavian tradition.
