"DesignTorget is a commercial market place for unique design, for people who value style, function and innovation".
This is a simple way to summarize the business idea behind one of our favorite Swedish stores. DesignTorget sell a selection of articles for everyday use, from either established or unknown designers. The articles are sold for a limited time only in their seven stores in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö.
What lifeiscarbon® especially likes about DesignTorget, beyond their eclectic product selection, is the close contact they have with their designers. A committee or jury meets every week to select which products, from the many submissions they’ve received from designers, will be sold at DesignTorget.
It’s clear to us that their selection criteria not only includes high quality and functionality but that they also look for products that encourage or reflect new thinking, as well as products with a sense of humor.
The architect Jerry Hellström had been working for some time as a consultant on various projects at Stockholm´s Kulturhuset (The Culture House) when, in 1993, they asked him if he had any idea about what to do with a large empty space on the ground floor of their building. This was at a time of recession in the Swedish economy, and many designers and inventors were unemployed. Jerry began to think about creating a marketplace for them and their products. DesignTorget was born and in the early days the products were delivered and sold on loading pallets, which were placed around the store.

Pacifier by Linda Sätterström.
Over the past 12 years, the company has continued to grow and now has 7 stores spread around Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. DesignTorget´s concept has become well established especially among those interested in design, interior design or just people trying to find a unique gift for someone special.
DesignTorget is now wholly owned by Novax, part of the Axel Johnson group.
