Magazines We Love: Part 3
Without a shadow of a doubt, our current favorite design and lifestyle magazine, published anywhere in the world, is Nytt Rom - New Scandinavian Rooms. A bold statement perhaps, but one look at the topics they cover, the quality of their photography and the overall layout and design will explain our love for this Norwegian magazine.
Lifeiscarbon® recently talked to Hans Petter Smeby, Editor and Founder of Nytt Rom and asked him about the magazine’s philosophy and plans for the future.
What was the inspiration for starting Nytt Rom?
To promote Scandinavian design, architecture and lifestyle both locally and internationally. I believe they are unique because of the light, culture and climate. Is your aim to cover Norway in particular or the whole of Scandinavia?
We try to cover the whole of Scandinavia, but our heart is close to Norway. At the same time, we find that many of the more interesting designs come out of Denmark.
Does Nytt Rom have a house style or a specific design aesthetic that it favors?
It favors personality with northern forståelse (understanding). By which I mean, it favors styles that don’t copy international trends but are modern... with fireplaces, landscape, ice and fjords, for example.
How would you define Scandinavian Aesthetics?
Don’t try to show off too much. Keep warm and safe. In other words... Let it last.
Nytt Rom has an English sub title (ie New Scandinavian Rooms) and we feel that there's a huge international readership potential for it. Do you have any plans to become bi-lingual with English and Norwegian text?
We had both languages in the first three editions and in 2007 we have plans to publish special editions with English text and articles aimed at international readers.
Nytt Rom is publshed twice a year and issue #5 is currently on the newstands.

Looks nice, could skateboard on it, aesthetically pleasing, functional and fun!
