Northern Lights
December is a dark month in Scandinavia and tends to reveal gloomy spots at home in need of better lighting. Having admired the classic-looking Snowball floor lamp displayed in a local lighting store for some time, we went in to take a closer look. We were surprised to discover that the lamp with its obvious art deco references is a new design by the young Norwegian company, Northern Lighting.
Claiming inspiration from the forests around Oslo, the tall retro lamp Oslo Wood is an elegant tripod light and perhaps our favorite offering from Nothern Lighting. Polar is an organically shaped glass lamp that, through a special technique, is transparent at one end and frosted opal at the other. The handsome ceiling lamp Maze, is also worth mentioning. Designed by Rudi Wulff, it balances geometric shades around a single source of light, resulting in a clean, yet layered look.
The designers behind Northern Lighting come from diverse backgrounds with varying experience from different fields of design. One is an award winning chef, one an accomplished furniture designer, and the third an electronic product developer. This diversity in backgrounds seems to paying off. Northern Lighting’s first collection is already earning them a place in the spotlight of Scandinavian contemporary design.
