Ditte Loves White
One of favorite Scandinavian designers of the moment is Ditte Hammerstrøm from Denmark. She never ceases to surprise us with her unconventional approach to the ordinary objects of everyday life. Her designs are quirky yet practical and seem to capture a timeless beauty. As with many other of today’s younger designers from Scandinavia, whilst Ditte’s designs are practical and useable there’s a sense that these are objects of art with a statement to make.
A great example of her innovative approach is Room Set in which Ditte has taken common items of furniture from a living room and pushed their grouping to the absolute limit. Different elements grow out of each other but can still be used for their original purpose. We’re put in mind of Philippe Stark’s early room designs for the Morgans Hotel Group.

Sofa Set. In partnership with Erik Jørgensen. Winner of the Dansk Statens Kunstfond in 2004.
Another good example of her innovative designs is Blanket, a blanket with built in lighting components. Ditte has turned an ordinary object of domestic comfort into a responsive organism. The edge of the blanket is bordered with tiny light bulbs, providing illumination for reading in bed or in an armchair. The border lights up when touched. For purpose of practicality, the outer-layer of the blanket is wool and can be removed and washed. Another of Ditte’s design worth a mention is Hang Out, a product conceived as a room within a room for shoes and coats.
So many of Ditte’s designs are favorites of ours that it’s impossible to list them all here but take a look at her website to see more of her projects.
