Scandinavian Neo-Edwardian
lifeiscarbon® has fallen in love with the first two collections from Göran Sundberg, a new fashion designer from Sweden. He claims that his underlying influence comes from the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s study of cultural fields, social positions and assimilated agents of taste. This theoretical departure point certainly results in some highly wearable garments in which an aristocratic sense of style collides with the realism of the streets.
We love the cut, materials and details of the new collections and the interesting combination of refinement and nonchalance in which the salon meets the street.
Göran Sundberg says that his ambition was to recreate a modern day elegance as an alternative to stereotypical suits and formulaic distressed designer denim. The current collection consists of a dozen outfits for men and women in our favorite colors of black, white and grey. The range includes tailored jackets with shawl collars, double-breasted jackets, slim fit or straight cut pants and slim skirts. In terms of outerwear, the coats and capes are based on the MA1 flight jacket - transformed into more fashionable shapes.
Inspiration is said to have come from the Neo-Edwardian movement in England during the 1950’s, with slim chests and sleeves, high collars and pants with turn-ups. Details are taken from traditional eveningwear, with fabric-covered buttons, duchesse trimmings and cummerbund waistbands.
Göran Sundberg was trained in textile production, design and business administration and has previously worked as a designer/design assistant in Stockholm, Paris and the Far East. During the last few years he’s been working as a writer and editor for Habit magazine and at the Swedish Council for Architecture, Form and Design.
Göran Sundberg’s Autumn Collection (his debut) is availbable at three of our favorite Stockhom stores; Jus, Paul & Friends and Tjallamalla.
