The Swedish company Polarn O. Pyret couldn’t have changed its core business more than it has over the last century. Having started out as a company that helped prevent against unwanted pregnancies, it now caters to expectant mothers and young children.
In 1909, Nils Adamsson established his first store selling contraceptives. As years went on, the product-range expanded to include medical supplies, baby-care items and children's clothing. By 1976, the company had completely changed direction after selling its contraceptives division and phasing out its medical supplies stores. The company then changed its name to Polarn O. Pyret AB, and by the end of the 1970’s had become famous for its stripy cotton jersey material. Although these days childrenswear and baby clothes constitute the bulk of the Polarn O. Pyret range, they also have a ladieswear and maternity section.
As parents, what we love about Polarn O. Pyret’s children’s clothing, apart from their looks, is that they are easy to look after, simple to take on and off as well as being child-safe. We also like the fact that their website has a section for selling used clothing and the ability for parents to set up their own blog.
The Polarn O. Pyret chain now consists of 51 stores throughout Sweden and, since 2003, the company has been busy expanding overseas. They currently thirteen stores in Norway, five in England, two in Finland, one on Iceland, one in Estonia and one in Dublin.
