Environmental Fashion Collaboration

Anja1

Using a variety of traditional fabrics, either woven, crocheted, knitted or embroidered, Swedish designer Anja Hynynen creates well tailored garments that not only reflect an elegance from times gone by but also address contemporary environmental concerns.

In collaboration with Ardalanish, an organic farm on the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Hebrides that produces its own Hebridean and Shetland wool, Anja has created a couture collection that makes full use of their wonderful organic tweeds. lifeiscarbon® particularly love her Ardalanish Flounce Coat, a tweed ladies jacket, hand tailored and lined with a gorgeous natural silk/hemp fabric and her Ardalanish Hedgehog Coat, with its beautiful flowing lines and distinctive high collar.

Anja Hynynen was born in 1983 in Köping, Sweden. Arts and handcrafts were central to her growing up and after a time as a tailor's apprentice she studied textile and design in Borås, Sweden. Having always been conscious of the environment, Anja felt the only natural step was to start her own organic clothing label. Take a look below to see a selection of her designs and to read more about Ardalanish:

Ardalanish Farm lies in the remote south west corner of the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides, extending west from the white sand of Ardalanish Bay. Highland cattle and Hebridean sheep are reared for organic meat, and the sheeps' wool is used for weaving and knitwear. Organic turnips and potatoes are also grown.
Believing in the primary importance of understanding the land and its needs, all farming practices at Ardalanish Farm allow ecological relationships to develop with animals already co-evolved with the environment. Hopefully, the balance achieved with these methods produces a quality and an ethical standard that reflect the conditions that nature bestowed on this unique Hebridean landscape.
