Working with a wide range of products and materials, the young Norwegian designer Vibeke Skar strives to create distinctive products that people can relate to in an emotional way. Not satisfied with creating beautiful and functional designs, Vibeke´s ambition is to tell stories with the objects themselves; often finding inspiration in Norwegian nature, culture and traditions.
Born in Oslo and raised in Bærums Verk, Vibeke Skar has apparently always had a passion for creating things. An initial interest in fashion developed into a desire to design and make products. After three years of studying design in Florence, Vibeke moved home to Oslo to study at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design whilst also working at Frost Produkt. So far, the designer´s work has been exhibited in Oslo, Milan and Tokyo.
Recent designs include the simple and utilitarian Evergreen lamp by Northern lighting, Arctic Collection tables by Corinor AS and even a series of highly sculptural shoes for the Norwegian fashion designer, Fam Irvoll. Take a look below at some of our favorite designs by Vibeke Skar:
Lilly Lamp
The Lily Lamp was inspired by the Victoria water lily in the Botanical Gardens in Oslo. The lamp was originally made for Design Tide in Tokyo where the name of the exhibition was “Oslo-Tokyo: Personal stories from Oslo”. Here Vibeke´s story of the inspiration for the lamp:
‘I am walking in the middle of a big bed of flowers, sensing a sweet smell and total silence. Looking and taking pictures of all the colors and different shapes. I am visiting the most beautiful garden in Oslo; The Botanical Gardens. Founded in 1814, it contains about 7500 flower and plant species. Here you be inspired or take a picnic beside the waterfalls. The main attraction is the Victoria water lily, a white lily that becomes colored in the middle after the first night they are open’.
